“51 Days” chronicles the embrace of the polar night in the north, where autumn’s final wild blooms surrender to nature’s whims. Enshrouded in frost, they linger—poised as silent witnesses to the earth’s descent into slumber, into the hush of hibernation. In the northernmost reaches of Finland, the polar night, or kaamos, stretches its cloak of darkness across the land for 51 days—a temporal echo that lends its name to this evocative piece.
Rooted in Karelian and Baltic-Finnic paganism, my work reflects an animistic worldview, where harmony with nature is central. In mine and our belief, every element of nature—forests, lakes, moss, trees, animals—is inhabited by spirits or has a soul. My frozen puddles, a continuum of “51 Days,” “A Puddle” and “A Puddle in Australia”, became the gateway to discovering my artistic voice. Through glass and storytelling, I nurture and share Karelian cultural heritage with the world. My creations serve as windows into our past, telling stories of humanity, our forests, and the spirits of our ancestors.
